Grade 6 Blog
We have been saving our typing fingers for this Exclusive Edition of our Blog.
Yes that's right, we just came back from our three day, two night trip to Camp Chief Hector!
This Blog will be PACKED!
So stay tuned, we will tell you all about our incredible trip, and much more!
These three days might have been the besGt days in school we have ever had.
Everyone spent a lot of time packing their bags and getting ready to have tons of fun.
Although I think everybody who went on the trip was overpacked.
We all arrived at our school with our packed bags ready to go. The bus arrived at 10:00 am to carry us and another one for our bags. Our bus ride was very enjoyable because people had candy, music and a lot of talking.
We arrived at camp and went to the outdoor games court to start our trip and some fun activities like a rock paper scissors tournament. After that we went to our cabins and put our luggage in our own rooms.. Our dorms were so heated, and the bunks were also big. Afterwards we went to the Main Lodge and immediately we thought we had walked into a Five Star RESTAURANT! One of the counselors explained to us all the rules and what we are expected to do.
Our first meal was BBQ Beef Burgers (Beyond Meat Burgers for vegetarians and vegans) and kale salad. We also sang a “Repeat after me song” before we ate.
The food was so delicious!!
Afterwards we split into our groups which our teachers did an amazing job making, and went off to do camp activities. My group went on a hike to a beautiful clearing to learn about trees and hibernation. We learned and all, but I think everyone was admiring the view and playing on a bit of ice in the clearing. Even though that was fun and all, smashing icicles and snowball fights, it might not have been the best idea. Almost everybody in my group was limping on the way to our next activity, which was a game called Cluster Ball!
This is a version of gaga ball, if you know what that is,But in a building of empty dorms called the cluster with the perfect shape of a gaga ball pit in the center.
It was pretty hard to control your movement with shoes off and slippery socks on, but somehow our counselor managed to still destroy everybody in his path. He did leave the game for one round though, which left room for people under the age of seventeen to dominate.
Another group of kids from our school played “ Crossed or Uncrossed? ”
You were handed two sticks and are supposed to say crossed or uncrossed shaping the two sticks in an orientation of crossed or uncrossed. Another counsellor was also playing and she got it right every single time because she knew how to play it. The other people did not know that so they started calling the counsellor “ Teacher’s Pet.” This actually had nothing to do with saying crossed or uncrossed correctly, the key was to say thank you before you say crossed or uncrossed. This got everyone because it was so natural to say thank you. Afterwards, some people got it right and then most people got it right after. It must have been pure joy for the counsellors to see us so confused.
It was time for our first dinner at Camp Chief Hector! We had creamy, magical and delectable delicious scalloped potatoes with Chicken Beef Stew and Vegetable Stew for Vegans and Vegetarians which were so delicious and flavorful!
After dinner we had Teacher Time. In the old lodge, the oldest building in the camp, the whole grade gathers to play games and have a mini talent show at the end. On the first night, the counselors joined in for the fun too! They put on acts of their own, one where the man in the brown trench coat tells us of the tales and objects he met in his adventure he has ‘‘just come back from,’’ and a repeat after me song. It went like this. There are NO bananas in the sky, in the sky, there are NO bananas in the sky, in the sky. There’s a Sun, and a Moon, and a COCONUT TREE PIE but There are NO bananas in the sky, in the sky, there are NO bananas in the sky, in the sky. This made sure we all knew that there indeed were no bananas in the sky. This was a major turning point in our lives, as we never knew this before.
One of the last things on our first day was special snack time. One of our Nellie Grade six students played Riptide. This was perfect with our special snacks which were chocolate muffins. Afterwards, it was bedtime. All of us made our beds, adjusted the heaters in a scorching room,( I never adjusted.) Put on pajamas, brushed our teeth and went to sleep.
The second day, even though mostly everyone didn’t get a good sleep, was still very fun. All of us woke up at seven thirty in the morning. At least it was a delicious breakfast of waffles, eggs and bacon. That day the roles were reversed, The people who played games went on a hike and built forts with wooden logs laying on the ground. The people went on a hike the day before, played games and went on a challenge course. ( It wasn’t really a challenge though)
Before lunch everybody got cold and met in the lodge gathering room. Hot chocolate and a fun teamwork filled economy game to convince Taylor Swift to perform at our little laminated sports arena with our cities civilization, and a little talent show.
Dinner time was no different than usual, while still delicious, teacher time once more with games and talent shows, the continuation of guitars and magic shows.
Once again the night comes, thankfully i think everybody got a better sleep than the first night, knowing that the next day after lunch we will be on our, we will be moving along.
The next day was no different from the last, seven thirty wake up, delicious breakfast and off we go separated. Except this time we did not separate for long. My group went to see the horses in their pens, and to be completely honest I'm not sure about the others. But after an hour we met in a forest to play a camp grand finale game, Predator Prey!
Pinnies according to the food chain, team chant and code calls, and teachers acting as hunters at the top of the food chain horribly missing us with bean bags.
That was probably the highlight of the trip, but after lunch it all had to come to an end.
An hour-long bus ride home brought us to now. This is Rugved and Thomas signing off, Thank you for your time.
Grade 6 Blog 3
The Grade Sixers have worked long and hard at the remembrance day ceremony this week by creating Poppies for our wreaths, and making our class personalized Land Acknowledgement.
First and foremost, we will talk about the “ Mart Project ”(Math+Art). The “Mart” project was for the “Created by Kids” website. We made shapes on self-made grid paper and drew drawings from our trips to South Glenmore Park and OH Ranch on the shapes. Our art could be purchased by our parents when printed on items like mugs, T shirts, all of that on the Created By Kids website. So, if you are reading this Blog, you can see your kid's art while having your morning cup of coffee if you want.
Another part of our contribution to The Remembrance Day Ceremony was the Grade Six personalized Land Acknowledgement. When we went to OH Ranch and South Glenmore Park we brought our visual journals to note down the five senses which are sight, smell, taste, hear and texture. An additional section was feelings.
The students then took their best phrases and notes and put it into a line of poetry. In the beginning of the day our teachers asked us to write two lines of poetry on each of the senses. Afterwards, we took the best lines from that personalized poetry and turned it into our own poem like Land Acknowledgement.
This would later be combined into a Grade Six Land Acknowledgement to the land of Southern Alberta that was performed at our Remembrance Day Ceremony. The people who had their lines and were good speakers would say the lines at the Ceremony on Thursday.
Both my partner and I were selected with around ten others.
If you came to the Ceremony, you would see me second to the left and my partner second to the right.
Of course we sang on Thursday. We have a Grade Six and Grade Five Choir led by our fine arts teacher, Mrs. Jane Dennison A.K.A the best music teacher in the world.
Though we would love to continue because there’s lots to tell, that would bring our blog to a close.

Grade 6 blog 2
The Grade Sixers of Nellie McClung school have had quite the Halloween week.
To start us off for the blog, let's tell you a little bit about Math.
After finishing our Multiplication experiment as described in the last blog, we moved on to learn about area, perimeter and volume. Through the start of the week we studied all about it. Videos, worksheets, all of that sort of stuff. We even made a group poster all about it using our background knowledge!
But most exciting, on Wednesday, we had the chance to make a three dimensional city out of paper, and measure the area, perimeter, and volume of all the buildings and land.
Me and my chosen partner's city was called “Wonky Willy town” due to the strange buildings and land plot.
Boy was that a fun project or what!
Though we would love to tell you of other subjects, we will now talk about Halloween because,
Well, it's Halloween!
So, now to talk about the Nellie McClung School Halloween dance!
The grade six set it up, I and a couple others stayed in extra to finish
In the end the work was worth it 100 percent.
The energy was incredible! The DJ had made it feel like a concert. projections on the wall, all costumes unique.
Even a costume dance contest, which a group of girls from Grade Six with their Alvin and the Chipmunks costumes had won. Everybody had a great time.
Of course,Halloween, Thursday October 31st was indescribable. Almost everyone wore their costumes and there were some pretty cool costumes out there. I was a pattern changing LED mask and my partner was a magician.
The whole school paraded around showing off their costumes, then we went into the gym and had the traditional “Halloween JustDance Party.”
After that the grade sixes made Tim Burton inspired self portraits.
Big eyes, skinny neck, all of them spooky with unique frames.
Then, of course we had the annual Class halloween party.
Board games, Scooby Doo, and to end it off, the class costume picture.
It was a fun halloween, a fun week, and will come to be a fun year.

Happy Halloween!
October 25th Blog Update
The Grade Six students of Nellie have had quite the exciting week.
In every subject, the grade sixers have had many interesting fun projects to do.
In science last week, we had tremendous fun making ice cream using the scientific method.
For some people it was creamy, sweet and delicious but for others, let's just say they may have made some minor flaws. We then did a “Water Balloon” experiment. We measured the circumference of a balloon filled with water, gave the balloon a name and on Tuesday October 22nd, we received our balloons frozen from the time in the freezer. The water inside was frozen into ice. We then measured the balloon once more, and surprisingly the circumference was bigger. It turns out that when water freezes it expands instead of contracting. It is nature’s miracle! Then we poured food colouring into the ice ball. After that we poured Kosher Salt on the ice to decrease the melting point of the ice. We then kept it aside.
Second, in math the Grade Six kids did a science experiment, about Multiplication!
We received a piece of paper with multiple multiplication charts to solve and fill out in five minutes, but we timed it by different music. Our teacher, Ms. Tanis put on music with an alarm going off, and when that alarm went off we would record our scores in a data table to see which music genre is best for multiplication. We had four different music genres: House music, Classical music, Rap music and Annoying music. All of the students did all of the categories of music three times to evaluate. Wasn’t that such a cool experiment! But please never play The Barbie song again!
And last but not least, our social studies projects. D&D Democracy and Pillars of Democracy Comic. To start, the most interesting of the bunch was the D&D Democracy.
Using a textbook, we adventured through the pages to find the answers in a booklet.
We gave ourselves a special power and race. I was a “Dragonborn Sorcerer,” and my partner in writing was a “Druid Wizard.” Our second project was to make a comic about one of the pillars of democracy of your choice. This was very fun because you get to create your own situation about your chosen pillar and make it into an interesting and unique comic.
To conclude, this was one, if not the best weeks of Grade Six so far.
Thank you for taking your valuable time to read this blog.

October 4th Blog Update
Students have been working with Ms. Mere, a professional playwright, to play games, develop ideas and share in the playwriting process for our upcoming grade 6 production. We are very excited for Ms. Mere’s return next month, when she shares her first draft of the script which will undoubtedly include the students’ many creative ideas and words!
Wednesday was a beautiful day to spend together at OH Ranch, learning on the land and creating meaningful memories together. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who shared in this day!
Over the past few weeks, we continue to gain confidence and practice with addition and subtraction of decimal numbers. We have also been working with manipulatives to understand the steps behind the traditional algorithms for both multiplication and division of decimal numbers.
Our novel study of The Giver has continued over the past few weeks. Students have been further developing their ‘Reader’s Toolbox’ through employing active reading strategies, such as visualization, making predictions and connections between themselves, other texts and the world. In addition, students have been building their ‘Writer’s Toolbox’ by analyzing literary devices, such as foreshadowing, imagery and symbolism that author’s use to engage readers.
September 12th Blog Update
Today, our teachers announced our jobs. Some of the jobs include floor cleaner, lunch police, and classroom CEO. Our teachers decided that we would use a website that would give us fake money when we do our jobs. And if we are not following rules we can get a fine. If we were being respectful and helping others with math, science and other subjects, we can get bonus points. The money is used to buy things like class movies, free computer time, baking and science activities.
We have been doing some soccer drills and soccer games. We are all being very respectful as well as showing good sportsmanship. We have also been doing Hiit training. Hiit training is where we do a very intense workout for around a minute at a time. We have been doing this every Monday and Wednesday.
In math, we started making name tags using geometry. We used all kinds of different shapes and lines. We also learned how to use semi-circular protractors. We used data tables and fractions for candy math. If you're wondering what that is, it's where you put out some candy and then do the fraction, decimal and percent of all the colors of candy..
We have also been learning a lot about matter. We have learned that matter has weight and volume. WeWe have also learned that air does actually have weight. We have also been taught about atoms and molecules.
We have also started a new class novel that everyone has been absolutely loving. It is called The Giver. Both grade 6 classes have been trying to figure out what “released” and other words alike it mean!
In social, we have been learning about direct democracy and representative democracy. Representative democracy is where people vote for a representative and the representative votes for the president. A direct democracy is where all citizens over 18 years of age vote for a leader. We have been doing a bunch of simulations to help us see democracy in action.
