Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie!
Week One is done!
Preparing for back-to-school season, Nellie teachers pulled out all our fun, “get to know you” games, icebreakers and community building activities. Back-to-school games can go a long way in the early weeks of school to help your students feel more comfortable in the classroom. Plus, they kickstart the process of getting to know unfamiliar classmates and forming new friendships! Using first day of school and first week of school for get-to-know-you games can make a big difference in creating a team atmosphere and maybe even help your students forge new friendships. Ask your child who they met that they didn’t know before this week.
It was such a positive first week for staff. Thank you for popping over to say hello when I am outside in the morning or afterschool. I enjoyed reconnecting with many of you and meeting some new parents
I am always happy to meet with parents to answer any questions. Please reach out!

Birthday treats
We love to celebrate Student Birthdays at Nellie! We all know that birthdays are important to every child and that kids like to celebrate with their classmates. However, sending in a food treat to the classroom to celebrate can exclude those children who have food allergies, diabetes or other dietary restrictions. According to the Centers for Disease Control allergies have increased more than 20% among North American children since the mid 1990’s. Many teachers will also admit that they would rather not have to deal with food in the classroom, especially cupcakes (very messy!).
Because Nellie has many students and several staff with severe, life-threatening allergies, we strongly encourage food-free birthday celebrations for the classroom. Non-food celebrations are more inclusive for ALL students with food allergies or other dietary restrictions. Foods can be very dangerous for a child in the classroom with food allergies. I once had a very scary experience in one school where I learned that the the milk protein is found in gummy bears! We all want to avoid these kind of scenarios. For these reasons, The CBE Administrative Regulation No. 6002 Student Health Services stipulates that staff responsibilities include d) avoid allergenic foods and substances for classroom events or activities; e) discourage the sharing or trading of food.
Some parents may dislike the idea of not bringing in a Pinterest-worthy food treat for the class, but there are so many creative and fun ideas that are food-free such as stickers, cool pencils, fun erasers, book marks for the birthday child to hand out. Please help us to keep our students and staff safe by choosing a food-free way to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, and save the food treats for home.
