Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie,
It was an exciting first week of December with several exciting events! See photos in the Nellie Weekly Pics link at the bottom of this message.
WEEK IN REVIEW
On Monday, Grade 3 Students had an in-school field trip to learn about states of matter for Science. Anything on earth that takes up space and has mass is made up of matter. To fully understand how materials have the potential to be changed, we must understand the characteristics of the three states of matter – solid, liquid and gas. This interactive experience was filled with lots of hands-on activities that left students with practical knowledge of how matter can be altered in materials you use in your daily life and how some changes are irreversible. They made their own soap and even explored the effects of temperature on the different states of matter so they can apply this information learned to understand the water cycle.
Grade 2s took part in Football 101. We got to meet Calgary Stampeder football players Tre Roberson and Marken Michel. Football is a sport that demands skill, teamwork, and discipline. Students took part in basic drills to practice ball control, balance, and agility, and they learned about the rules of the game. We learned that different player “positions” have different jobs, but all players on the team work together to advance the ball down the field. After some practice, students took part in their own scrimmage, showing off their skills!
Grade 6s took a field trip to Calgary Police Service's Youth Link Centre. The Safe for Life Field Trip is a one-day crime prevention experience directly connected to the Grade 6 Health and Life Skills Alberta Curriculum, guiding students through our four Safe for Life zones, Drugs, Healthy Relationships, Cyber Safety, and Gangs. Students participated in hands-on activities and authentic discussions and learned about real-life issues and skills in each of the four topics, with the goal of inspiring the youth to make safe decisions as they navigate the transition to Junior High School. Police perspectives, safety strategies, and roles in the community are a vital component of this program. Students were lead through the experience as investigators. They solved a crime as they navigate the evidence, meet the suspects, and use their learning in our S4L areas to crack the case!
