Happy  long weekend, Citizens of Nellie!

WEEK IN REVIEW

  • Nellie has reached over 50% of its Jump Rope for Heart fundraising goal! Your efforts are making a real difference, and we’re so grateful for your support! The funds you’re raising help families like Sophie and Mia’s. Both were born with the same complex heart defect, but thanks to research funded by programs like Jump Rope for Heart, their treatment journeys were very different. Sophie had surgery at age three in 1986, while her daughter Mia received advanced, personalized care and underwent open-heart surgery at just five months old in 2018.  Click here to watch Sophie and Mia’s story to see the impact of your support.
We are working hard at gaining new skipping skills and building healthy active habits during our Jump Rope for Heart campaign. At each fundraising level there is a fun teacher dress up from different decades, which students are also invited to participate in. If the students reach the full $2000 fundraising goal, by Friday January 20th, Teachers will perform an entertaining skit! Please help us meet our goal of $2000: Nellie Jump Rope for Heart Donations
  • On Monday, Mat Robinson, two time Team Canada Hockey Olympian visited our grade 5 classes. Robinson shared about how adversity has been the greatest lesson in his sports career. Defenceman Mat Robinson made his Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018 where he scored one goal and added an assist to help Team Canada win the bronze medal. He also scored once during his second Olympic appearance at Beijing 2022.
  • On Tuesday, grade 6s had two in-school field trips:
-For Social Studies, each class took part in a "Charter Challenge". Students explored individual rights and fundamental freedoms in the Canadian Charter through immersive games and scenario-based group activities. They examines what rights are and how it can be used to advocate for change. Through hands-on discussion and debate, students learned how laws and the Charter protect Canada’s diverse society, support democracy and empower citizens to use their voices to reflect on rights, freedoms and responsibilities.
-For Science, students were launched into the world of forced interactions in this energy based science program themed "Mission To Mars!" While conducting scientific investigations, students identified how internal and external force interactions lead to physical changes in shape for a variety of objects. In their Mission Log, students explored plasticity, elasticity, and Newton’s Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.  In a dramatic conclusion to the program, students applied the results of their scientific investigations to design and build a Mars Lander!
