Happy Friday, Citizens of Nellie!
WEEK IN REVIEW - This week, our grades 2/3 & 4 students took part in Cross country Ski at School Phys. Ed. residency. Foothills Nordic offered this Ski at School program, introducing Nellie students to the joys of cross-country skiing right in their own school yard! They provided everything needed for a fun and safe experience—track setting, top-quality equipment, and expert coaching. Cross-country skiing in aligns with the Alberta Physical Education Program of Studies by fostering active, healthy lifestyles. It teaches fundamental skills like equipment handling, falling/getting up, gliding, and basic, classic-style movement on school grounds or local trails. Thank you Foothills Nordic!
- On Tuesday, Report Cards became available for viewing by parents on MyCBE accounts. Check out this video for more information on how to log in and navigate the portal when you have more than one child attending CBE schools. Video Tutorial: Kindergarten to Grade 9
- On Tuesday through Thursday this week, our grade 6s spent three days/two nights at Camp Chief Hector YMCA, located near Calgary in Bow Valley Provincial Park. During their outdoor education experience, students explored forest ecosystems and astronomy, while building teamwork and leadership skills through activities such as canoeing, hiking, shelter building, and group challenges. The trip provided a wonderful opportunity for students to strengthen friendships, build resilience, and bring their classroom learning to life in a natural setting.
- Wednesday Feb. 25 was Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day began in 2007 when a student in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. It has since been recognized annually worldwide as a day to stand against bullying. Pink Shirt Day encourages Albertans to be inclusive, welcoming and supportive with colleagues, clients, friends and family. Building healthy relationships is one of the best ways to prevent bullying and create safe environments.
- On Thursday Feb. 26 Grade 4s took part in YYC hot chocolate fest, taking a walking field trip to Heritage Park Railway Cafe. After the trip, students used their writing skills to write a review/persuasive article focused on Sentence Construction, Descriptive Language, Sensory Detail and Experience.
- Fri. Feb. 27 Professional Learning Day- Nellie's commitment to research-informed, explicit, and systematic literacy practice is focused on best practices in both foundational and higher-level literacy skills. We want to move learners towards the transfer of understanding across disciplines and experiences, building upon the literacies and strengths already inherent in all learners. For teachers of struggling readers, we gain insight into why a child might have trouble learning to read, so we can target specific assessment and intervention supports. Responsive teaching practices create equitable learning opportunities and ensure that all learners are engaged in meaningful, joyful, and challenging work. Check out some pieces of what we're learning about here: CBE Literacy Framework Literacy Strategies
