Nellie in the Know March 5

Happy Friday, Citizens of Nellie!

WEEK IN REVIEW

  • This week we welcomed Keston from Sound Kreations for a week  long hip hop dance residency, focused on Embracing Authentic Hip-Hop Movement and History in the Tik-Tok Era. “Real Tok,” is an electrifying dance program tailored for the school system, where we dove deep into the heart of Hip-Hop, its iconic moves, and the rich history that fuels today’s pop culture trends.  By participating, students not only built and polished their dance skills but also gained an appreciation for the roots, diversity, and social influence of Hip-Hop.  During our hip hop dance residency this week, students worked toward key outcomes from the Alberta Education Program of Studies in both Physical Education and Arts Education. Through learning and performing choreographed hip hop routines, students develop fundamental movement skills such as coordination, balance, rhythm, spatial awareness, and body control. They apply elements of dance (body, space, time, and energy) to create and perform short movement sequences, demonstrating cooperation, creativity, and personal expression. This residency supported physical literacy, confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation for dance as both an artistic and active form of expression.
  • On Wednesday, Grade 1s took a field trip to  the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. Our Grade 1 students visited the zoo as part of their learning in the Alberta Program of Studies for Grade 1 Science. This field trip supported outcomes in Living Systems and Earth Systems, where students explore how local environments meet the basic needs of plants and animals, how humans depend on plants and animals, and how seasonal changes affect living things. By observing animals and their habitats up close, students were able to make real-world connections to what we have been learning in class, including how animals adapt through behaviours such as migration and hibernation. This hands-on experience helped bring the Alberta curriculum outcomes to life in an engaging and meaningful way. Students enjoyed looking closely at the animals in the Canadian Wilds, while participating in a Zoo program called Edu Trek: Wild Canada.  Wild Canada Edu-Trek is an unforgettable zoo tour that takes you on an adventure through various natural habitats found across the Canadian landscape. Our conservation educators will lead you on an educational and entertaining journey, introducing you to a diverse range of wildlife species and the conservation efforts that protect their natural habitats.
  • Also on Wednesday, Grade 6 (Ms. Polly) field trip to Youth Link CalgaryThis one-day free Grade 6 field trip directly connects to the Grade 6 Health and Life Skills Alberta Curriculum, guiding students through four Safe for Life zones: Drugs, Healthy Relationships, Cyber Safety, and Gangs. Students participated in hands-on activities and authentic discussions, and learned about real-life issues and skills in each of the four topics, with the goal of  making safe, informed decisions as they navigate the transition to Junior High School. Police perspectives, safety strategies, and roles in the community are a vital component of this program. Students were lead through the experience as investigators. They even solved a crime as they navigated the evidence, met the suspects, and used their learning in the S4L areas to crack the case. (Ms. Tanis' class goes on Tuesday March 17).
  • This Thursday evening was our Spring Family Dance: Neon Glow party! A big shout out to our School Council for organizing this fun event, and all the volunteers and families who donated prizes, helped set up and clean up, and ran kiosk sales for pizza, cotton candy, drinks, candy bags.  The glow in the dark outfits and an awesome DJ made the night a huge hit.
