Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie!
A little note about absences...
We have had some feedback from parents regarding unnecessary absence messages when the parent has already let the school know the child will be absent. Please understand that although this may be a change from previous practice, it was highlighted as an item needing attention during the school's safety review. It is a precaution that is required by all CBE schools to confirm and verify lates and absences by notifying parents. This may be irritating, to receive a message that you've already given the school, but consider it a double check that ensures the school and you are both on the same page regarding where your child is. Given our platform, this is not always something Ms. Karen can control or override in our digital platform:
- Once an absence is marked by the teacher in PowerSchool, it takes 15 to 30 minutes to appear in SchoolMessenger.
- Attendance information is exported from PowerSchool every 15 minutes, starting on the hour. E.g.: 8:30, 8:45, 9:00...
- It then takes another 15 minutes to import into SchoolMessenger.
- Eg: if the teacher completes attendance in PowerSchool at 8:55, it will export at 9:00 and appear in SchoolMessenger at 9:15.
We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding and support in working with us to ensure student safety.
The Week in Review
Students got to try bouldering this week! Last Friday afternoon teachers were all trained on how to safely teach students bouldering skills. Young climbers can learn confidence, athleticism, problem solving skills, how to manage success & failure, and more while having a great time. When climbing, you constantly use your major muscle groups (arms, shoulders, back, abdominal, and even legs) and many minor ones to climb the wall. This full-body workout can help you build strength, improve flexibility, and increase endurance. Students played games and challenges such as Rock, Paper Scissors; Dodgeball Wall; Shark Attack; Heist; Huckle Buckles; Mission Impossible and more! Ask them about their favorite game! Kindergarten hatched and released butterflies! Raising butterflies with kindergarten-aged children offers a unique and engaging way to explore the natural world and learn about the butterfly life cycle. By observing the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, kids can witness firsthand the wonders of metamorphosis. Ask your student if they know the four distinct stages in a butterfly's life cycle. (They start as an egg, hatch into a caterpillar, turn into pupae during metamorphosis, and finally emerge as a butterfly). There comes a time when the butterflies have to be released. Ms. Child's grade 1 class spent all five days this week at Stampede School! Students watched an indigenous hoop dancer perform, visited with some farm animals, designed their own cowboy belt buckles, met the Stampede Princesses, saw a working blacksmith, learned about the 2013 flood and more! Photos are on our weekly pics link and the Nellie McClung Community page.
