Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie,

It was an exciting week! See photos below in the Nellie Weekly pics of the following exciting events this week:

Grade 2 students got to see and learn about the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup

Students met Nik Ledgerwood, assistant coach with Cavalry FC. Mr. Ledgerwood is one of our own Nellie parents who brought in the trophy won by the Calgary Cavalry Team this year. He talked about the importance of teamwork and winning the championship. Calgary Cavalry Club is a Canadian professional soccer club. The club competes at the top of the Canadian soccer league system in the Canadian Premier League. On November 9, 2024, Cavalry won its first ever Canadian Premier League championship, earning a 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup  in the process.

Grade 3 students visited the Zoo on Tuesday. They took a guided Edu-trek through the Canadian Wilds, on an unforgettable tour that took them on an adventure through various natural habitats found across the Canadian landscape. Students experienced an educational and entertaining journey, introducing them to a diverse range of wildlife species and the conservation efforts that protect their natural habitats. Some animals observed  included cougars, bears, mountain goats, moose, whooping cranes, river otters, and polar bears. Curricular Outcomes included describing the appearances and life cycles of some common animals and identifying their adaptations to different environments.

Grade 6 students participated in Outdoor School from Mon - Wed this week at Camp Chief Hector. Outdoor Schools Programs are designed to foster environmental awareness and community building in an outdoor setting. The activities are designed to be a holistic approach to teaching Alberta Learning Objectives in an adaptable setting for all students.  Camp Chief Hector provided inclusive and immersive outdoor experiences to all students, while facilitating learning of meaningful and relevant Alberta curriculum. Students learned to have fun in the cold weather, hiking, playing outdoor games and participating in challenge courses. They made unforgettable memories and built strong friendship bonds with each other singing around the campfire in the evenings, sharing crafts, and performing talents!

The Used Book Sale on Thursday was a huge success. Each class was scheduled for a shopping and buying time. books were spread across multiple tables. Our Nellie students love of reading was celebrated with crowds of student readers flocking to the sale to browse and buy gently used books. Thanks to all those who donated and to all the volunteers and who made it happen!

Please Help!  December Giving Tree

Our hearts at Nellie are BIG! Over the years, Nellie families have supported other Nellie Families through the Giving Tree.  There are a number of families in our community who are struggling to make ends meet.  As a Nellie Community, during the holiday season we come together and provide gifts food and any additional help for the families.

This year we kindly ask that each donated item be wrapped before it is dropped off and labeled with the family number, along with the family member that it is kindly being donated for. If possible please include a gift receipt.  If you would like to make a donation to the Giving Tree and would like a tax receipt, please email transfer our treasurer at treasurernellie@gmail.com with your contact info ( name and address) in the comments, and our amazing treasurer Sarah will get this sorted out for you.

New this year, are the Wish List items.  These items listed are family items that can be new or previously loved.  These items do not need to be wrapped and just placed in a bag and labeled for the intended family. Please have all your donations dropped off by Monday December 9, 2024.

THANK YOU to our AMAZING Nellie McClung Community for always being so supportive and generous.

We are going collect for the Calgary Food Bank again this year and make it a fun school event with a little competition!

Formula-ONE - to collect baby formula. This is a item that is in high demand at the food bank.

Task: Real life Formula-One car racing is a timed event, so our "Formula-One" event is also timed! How much baby formula (or baby food items) can be collected in 168 hours? (7 days)

Week 2 - Dec. 11th to 18th

Dominos with Kraft Dinner- to collect mac & cheese. KD is always in demand at the food bank

Task: - This is a school wide goal. We want to collect as much KD as possible and build a domino track in the gym! Every class can add to the domino track during their gym time on Dec. 18th. Then at the end of the day we can watch it fall. More details to follow.
