Nellie in the Know – October 11, 2024
Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie,
With the Thanksgiving weekend ahead, this is the perfect opportunity to help students cultivate an "attitude of gratitude". Practicing gratitude can be a game-changer: it has far reaching effects, from improving our mental health to boosting our relationships with others. Living your life with gratitude helps you notice the little wins—like the bus showing up right on time, a stranger holding the door for you, or the sun shining through your window when you wake up in the morning. Each of these small moments strings together to create a web of well-being that, over time, strengthens your ability to notice the good. I want to take this opportunity to express how grateful I feel to be part of such a special community of teachers and learners. It is a true gift to work among such talented faculty, staff, students and families. I wish you all a Thanksgiving weekend filled with family, friends and fun times together.
Week in Review
This week, we welcomed 6 first-year Education students from UofC Werklund into Nellie to observe different classes in action. This mentorship benefits both the pre-service student teacher and the mentor. Mentorship is giving back and developing a fresh perspective while assisting a young teacher with developing skills. Sometimes it makes us rethink what we are doing and why. This self-reflection can change our practice or reinforce it. Mentoring pre-service teachers is not only a valuable way to ensure continued excellence in the profession but it also serves as an excellent leadership and professional development opportunity for mentor teachers. These pre-service teachers will be with us next week as well, until October 18.
Digital Citizenship
Constable Villani visited our grade 5 and 6 classes to help students learn about Digital Citizenship (DC). In CBE schools, this means having the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to demonstrate responsible and respectful behaviour when using technology or participating in digital environments. Digital citizenship is key to helping students learn to use available technology responsibly to enable them to reach their full potential as learners. Each CBE school is required to have a digital citizenship plan that is updated annually. The plans address how a school will work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens. Schools use the CBE Digital Citizenship Competencies as a guide to create goals for their digital citizenship plans. The competencies are:
Respectful, Informed, Involved, Balanced, Safe, Responsible
Your child’s Digital Citizenship Plan can be found on the school website in Culture & Environment > Technology Tools > Digital Citizenship.
World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day was this Thursday and is celebrated every year on 10 October. Talking about our mental health can help us cope better with life’s ups and downs. So, on this day and beyond it, why not check in with your friends, family, peers, or colleagues? Here are some self-care tips:
Get regular exercise. Just 30 minutes of walking every day can boost your mood and improve your health. Eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated. Make sleep a priority. Try a relaxing activity. Set goals and priorities. Practice gratitude. Focus on positivity. Stay connected.
Diversity and Inclusion
This Sunday, October 12 is Vijaydashmi or Dusshera- the 10th and the last day of Durga Puja. All over India, Hindus celebrate this auspicious day in many different ways. In some parts, it’s the day Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasur. After nine days of Navratri, the festival culminates with the immersion of the idol of Durga. This was also the day King Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, killed Ravana, the 10-headed demon. To celebrate the legend huge effigies of Ravana are burned and with it burns all evil. Vijaydashmi’s the eternal promise that good will always vanquish evil.
If you ever have any questions, want to know how you can get involved or if you have concerns please email Ms. Aleta Terlecki at adterlecki@cbe.ab.ca .
Sincerely,
Aleta Terlecki, Acting Principal
