Nellie in the Know – October 18, 2024
Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie,
As we near the latter part of October, our weather is getting cooler, and snow is in the forecast for next week. Calgary weather can change quickly and unexpectedly at this time of year. Even if it is sunny and warm in the morning, it can be rainy later on. Unless the temperature is below -20c, (which is usually only mid-winter, hopefully it is not at this time of year!) students go outside every single day. Please help your child ensure they are dressed appropriately every day in case of cooler temperatures or rain.
Week in Review
- On Wednesday, grade 3-6 students attended an assembly to learn some important facts about Who was Nellie McClung. We were honored to welcome our guest presenter Carolyn Harley, a singer songwriter/recording artist/entertainer living in Calgary. Grade 6 students sang her song The Ballad of the Famous Five and Carolyn performed The Spirit of the Famous Five, which are two of her songs that Carolyn also believed could ‘make a difference’ . These 2 songs contains beautiful arrangements of two songs about five women who fought and won The Persons Case. These songs have been used at various events by The Famous 5 Foundation, Calgary’s Heritage Park, Charlottetown Summer Festival and at major events including the Canadian televised special for the unveiling of the monument to The Famous 5 on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 2000.
- On Thursday, Secret Path Week began. This is a national movement commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack. October 17th and 22nd respectively mark the dates that Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack joined the spirit world. In 1966, Chanie Wenjack ran away from a residential school and walked for 36 hours along the train tracks before dying of exposure on October 22. He was just 12 years old. Secret Path Week is an opportunity for people to answer Gord Downie’s call to action to “Do Something” by creating a reconciliACTION and furthering the conversation about the history of residential schools.
If you ever have any questions, want to know how you can get involved or if you have concerns please email Ms. Aleta Terlecki at adterlecki@cbe.ab.ca .
Sincerely,
Aleta Terlecki, Acting Principal
