Nellie in the Know

Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie!

NEWS ITEMS

  • We know a teachers strike will create difficulties for CBE staff and families. We value the contributions of all employees who support student success, and we respect the bargaining process. CBE is committed to keeping you informed as the situation evolves. If anything changes before Oct. 6, you will be informed. The most up-to-date information can also be found on the labour action page.
  • New fees for upcoming fieldtrips, workshop experiences and residencies are now added to your MyCBE accounts for activities taking place before Winter break. As we enter the second month of school, we are still carrying a deficit of $18, 987 in outstanding parent school fees that have not been paid from previous years.
CBE's preferred method of payments is online. If you are unable to make your payments in MyCBE, your child’s school will be able to accept debit/credit card payments at the school.
  • Across CBE, all field trips, residencies, workshops, running club, fun lunches and school council meetings that were planned for October have been cancelled and will hopefully be rescheduled for a later date to ensure students don't miss out on these valuable learning experiences.

WEEK IN REVIEW

  • On Monday, Sept. 29, teachers across CBE engaged in Professional Learning. At Nellie, teachers spent the morning with master storyteller, author and performer Lana Skauge. We learned new ways to engage students in story telling through using our bodies, movement, loose parts and visuals. In the afternoon, Leah from Artfelt Studio taught us the medium of wet felting so we can teach it to our students. This year Nellie's Indigenous learning is focused on the Seven Sacred Teachings and each grade will host an assembly to share their knowledge of one of the values, so teachers felted the animal associated with their grade's value.
  • On Wednesday October 1stGreen Calgary came into our grade 4 classrooms. The grade 4 Alberta curriculum topic "Waste in Our World" engages children in a hands-on, inquiry-based learning experience that explores waste management and its environmental impacts. Through teamwork, students built a model landfill and investigated innovative ways to reduce, divert, and manage waste responsibly. Aligned with cross-curricular competencies, this interactive program fostered critical thinking and environmental stewardship, empowering young learners to make a positive impact on their communities.
  • Wednesday Oct. 1st was also Running Club's first interschool race at Sam Livingston Elementary School.  We were so proud of all the students who came out to participate in this fun way to get active.
