Nellie in the Know – October 4, 2024
Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie,
As the Acting Principal during Mr. Dyck’s absence, I enjoyed meeting many parents at Meet the Teacher last Thursday and Friday. Thank you to the many parents who are introducing themselves to me during outdoor supervision in the morning and after school; you are such a warm and welcoming community. And what a fantastic first week I’ve had at Nellie! On my first morning this week, we had an assembly so I could introduce myself to all students, and they sang the new school song for me. It was such a fun, upbeat, way to begin my stay here!
Week in Review
Coding in grade 2: On Wednesday and Thursday this week we had Teacher’s Pet In-School Field Trips happening in grade 2, exploring STEM, computer science, coding and robotics! What do you get when you combine building blocks and robotics? You get Cubelets! Cubelets are magnetic blocks students sequence together to create and build robots – each with various coded actions. Student groups applied creativity and design principles to combine their blocks in different ways to achieve a variety of outcomes during these coding focused programs. See our new Nellie Weekly Pics.
Running Club: It was so great to see all our participants take part in our interschool race at Sam Livingston School on Wednesday. Research shows that extracurricular participation increases students’ sense of belonging. Participation in school clubs and activities also allows students to develop valuable life skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication and time management. These skills are essential for success in both academic and professional settings, and the hands-on experience gained through extracurricular activities often complements what is learned in the classroom. Thank you to all the family members who came out to support these students!
Diversity and Inclusion: For people of the Jewish faith, the holiday known as Rosh Hashanah is happening now, from October 2-4. Rosh Hashanah celebrates the Jewish New Year, which is different than the one that is celebrated on Jan. 1 every year. It's set using the Hebrew calendar, which is different than the calendar we use on a daily basis. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated now through the evening of Oct. 4, and the next big holiday after that is Yom Kippur, which "closes the book" on the former year, and is considered the holiest of Jewish holidays.
Each year, Sisters in Spirit Day is recognized in Alberta on October 4 to honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, their families, loved ones and communities. Representing the lives lost, a red dress from Awo Taan Healing Lodge is on public display at the Queen Elizabeth II Building in Edmonton. On this day, vigils and events are also held across the country to support family members and loved ones.
If you ever have any questions, want to know how you can get involved or if you have concerns please email Ms. Aleta Terlecki at adterlecki@cbe.ab.ca .
Sincerely,
Aleta Terlecki, Acting Principal
.
