WEEK IN REVIEW

  • This week CBE Schools acknowledged Treaty 7 Day,  Fall Equinox and Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  One of the competencies in the Alberta Teaching Quality Standard is "A teacher develops and applies foundational knowledge about First Nations, Metis and Inuit for the benefit of all students". Some classes played Indigenous games outside, some watched educational videos or read age appropriate stories, some participated in sharing circles or sit spots. Grades 4 and 6 took a walking field trip to Glenmore park to mindfully acknowledge the land quietly, observing, reflecting, and paying attention to sights, sounds, smells, and feelings of gratitude for the nature that surrounds us on Treat 7 land. Ask your student about  Phyllis' Story  about her orange shirt, and what else they learned about these important days of recognition.
  • Our Terry Fox Run on Thursday was so much fun, and more importantly, raised over $2000 for cancer research. See fun photos and videos of the teachers dressed in hilarious costumes while participating in the run by following Nellie on Instagram: NellieSparks.
  • This week Nellie welcomed 9 second year teacher candidates (TCs) from Mount Royal University into our classrooms to support them in their development as aspiring teachers.  Their education course this fall is focused on literacy; however, they will be engaged in supporting learners in a variety of subject areas. These TCs visit once a week and during that time, they will be working with students who could benefit from additional literacy support for about 30 minutes each week. We are excited to share their tutoring website: MRUReads.ca. The tutoring plans are based upon Structured Literacy principles and draw upon the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) and other resources. The framework can be adapted to the grade level and school context. We are so excited to benefit from this opportunity!
  • Our first School Council meeting of the year was Thursday eveningThe Principal's September report was shared;  school requests for funding from School Council for the year were explained, discussed and approved; and School Council voted on and launched an exciting new 3 year campaign & fundraising plan for a new playground. Stay informed- School Council minutes are always posted on the Nellie McClung school website

  • Fall School Picture Day is Wednesday, Oct. 1st.   Help your child pick out clothes and colours that look good on them. After all, your child is the star of the photo—not their shirt, so avoid slogans, logos, and big patterns. Every year students change, but school photos help you remember.
  • Running Club's first interschool race is Wednesday, Oct. 1st at 4:00pm at Sam Livingston Elementary School.  Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the race sites and supervision at the race sites. If you haven't already, please sign up ASAP directly with Mr. S.-  jaasiemieniuk@cbe.ab.ca.  There will be a $10 fee per student participant to cover the cost of pinnies and ribbons etc. This fee can be paid on the MyCBE account or in office by debit or credit before the second race.
