Happy Friday Citizens of Nellie!
Parents often wonder what teachers do on all these non-instructional days. All CBE Schools follow the CBE 2024-2025 Instructional Calendar. Here is the Instructional Calendar Explanation which can be found on the CBE website. Non-Instructional days are still work days for teachers. On these days, teachers are required to attend school and engage in professional learning to build our teaching capacity.
Today, Nellie Teachers spent our day engaged in revisiting best practices to build our capacity in teaching and supporting student literacy. Our learning is guided by the following CBE Policy and Regulation Documents which outline our Literacy Framework in CBE:
Policies and Regulations-CBE Literacy Framework. Here is some more information on The Reading Rope - Video which is a key piece of the Framework, for those who want to understand more about teaching reading.
If you want to support your child's literacy development at home, the CBE has put together this helpful resource for families: Family Literacy At-Home Activities & Resources
I am happy to meet with parents to answer any questions. Please reach out!
Kindest regards,
Aleta Terlecki

Week in Review
This week, Nellie celebrated Pink Shirt Day. Now a movement celebrated across the globe, Pink Shirt Day has humble beginnings. Inspired by an act of kindness in small-town Nova Scotia. Here is a snippet of an article detailing the original incident:
“A group of teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]…[They] took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school. It all began when a group of teens went to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. The bullies were never heard from again.” --Globe & Mail
