Nellie in the Know Oct. 30 , 2026
Happy Friday, Nellie Citizens!
NELLIE GIVING TREE- Nominations Open
Nellie has an incredible community. The holiday season is just around the corner and Nellie Community comes together to help the families in our school who are finding times a little tough. We come together as a community to ensure everybody has a wonderful winter holiday.
Please contact krknight@cbe.ab.ca for an application form to self nominate, or to nominate a family.
Families will receive a gift card to purchase groceries and gifts for each family member. Last year we helped over 60 people and 17 Nellie Families. Friday November 6th is the firm deadline to submit application forms.
HOT TOPIC- Driving in School Zones
The safety of our students, families, and staff is our highest priority. As you travel through the school and playground zone, please slow down, stay alert, and follow all posted traffic regulations. Remember that passing another vehicle in a playground or school zone is prohibited. Children can be unpredictable near roads and crosswalks, and even a moment of impatience can put someone at risk.
Traffic violations in school and playground zones carry significant penalties. For example, speeding fines in these zones are enhanced and can start at $176, increasing substantially with higher speeds. More importantly, safe driving helps ensure that all members of our school community arrive and depart safely each day. Thank you for helping keep Nellie McClung a safe place for everyone.
VETERANS WEEK -Honouring Our Veterans Through Giving.
Operation: Everyday Essentials – During the next two weeks, we are asking our community to help us support the Veterans Food Bank by donating:
- Kleenex
- Paper Towel
- Toilet Paper
Small donations. Everyday essentials. Meaningful support.
We will gather these essentials in our front hall to build a "Wall of Support"- a fun, concrete, visual way to collect the items and get students excited as they watch the display of support grow!
WEEK IN REVIEW
- On Monday and Tuesday our Grade 4 students enjoyed another two afternoons with EcoCooks. This science-based environment and food literacy program addresses how food choices impact our planet. Through fun, science-based, hands-on workshops students are empowered to take environmental action with every bite.
- Individual student results from the Provincial Literacy and numeracy screening were sent home this week for grades 1-5. These assessments provide a snapshot of how students are progressing in foundational literacy and numeracy skills and help teachers identify strengths, monitor growth, and plan targeted support where needed. We encourage families to review the results together and celebrate their child's learning journey.
- This week Nellie welcomed Rocks And Rings Curling residency in phys.ed. Presented by Curling Canada, this interactive program transformed our gym into an iceless curling rink, giving students an authentic curling experience using specialized floor curling equipment. Through this residency, students developed movement skills, teamwork, communication, strategy, and fair play while participating in physical activity, directly supporting Alberta Physical Education and Wellness outcomes related to active living, relationship building, and cooperative participation.
- On Friday, students were invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school and take part in a lively costume parade. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and see the imaginative costumes of their classmates in other grades. To end the day on a fun and energetic note, the whole school gathered in the gym to enjoy three Halloween-themed Just Dance videos. The laughter, movement, and school spirit made for a memorable celebration together!
Wishing all our Nellie families a fun and safe Halloween! Please remember to trick-or-treat with a trusted adult, wear reflective gear or carry a flashlight, and watch carefully when crossing streets. Have a wonderful evening making memories together! 🎃👻🧡 - You can see video highlights of these activities and other events on our school Instagram: NellieSpark
