HOT TOPICS

  • Reminder: Leave Toys and Special Items at Home. We kindly ask families to help us by ensuring that toys, stuffies, collectibles, and other special personal items stay at home. While these items are often meaningful to children, they can become distracting during learning time, cause conflict during recess times and sometimes get lost, damaged, or misplaced at school. Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a focused learning environment and avoid disappointment when treasured items go missing.
  • Dress for the weather. As we head into fall, Calgary weather can change quickly. Please ensure your child comes to school each day dressed appropriately for the forecast, including a waterproof jacket, suitable footwear, and any other outdoor gear they may need. In CBE, students go outside for recess and lunch every day unless the temperature falls below -20°C. While a sunny morning can quickly turn into a rainy or windy afternoon, students who get wet outdoors often find it very uncomfortable to sit in damp clothing for the remainder of the school day. Thank you for helping your child stay comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy outdoor play in all kinds of fall weather!
  • Store scooters and bikes on the correct designated racks outside. Just as bicycles need to be stored outside, all scooters need to be stored outside as well. Scooters should be secured in the scooter rack just outside the front door. Bikes need to go into the bike racks by the ally. As with bicycles, all scooter riders are reminded to wear a proper helmet when riding to/from school. Thank your for your cooperation.

WEEK IN REVIEW

  • On Monday we had a fantastic Terry Fox Run! Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Nellie community, we surpassed our fundraising goal of $3,000 for cancer research. To celebrate, our staff proudly "wigged out for Terry," sporting a variety of hilarious wigs that brought lots of laughter and school spirit to the event. A big shout out to our Parent Council for providing refreshments for our little runners! Thank you to everyone who donated, participated, and helped make a difference in the fight against cancer. Together, we showed that small acts can have a big impact! 
  • A Huge Thank You for Supporting Our Scholastic Book Fair which ran this week! It was wonderful to see so many students discovering new books and sharing their enthusiasm for reading. The funds raised through the Book Fair are used to purchase new books and learning resources for our school, helping us continue to foster a love of literacy and learning for all students. Thank you for making this event such a success and for helping us build a vibrant reading culture at Nellie McClung. Happy reading!
  • This week, students learned about Yom Kipper, Treaty 7 Day, the Fall Equinox, Chuseok (Korean Harvest Festival), and the Mid-Autumn Mooncake Festival, gaining a bit of insight into the histories, traditions, and values connected to each observance. At Nellie, we intentionally help students learn about and celebrate the many cultures, traditions, and perspectives that make up our community and world. Throughout the year, students explore recognized dates of cultural significance through classroom discussions, stories, activities, and learning experiences that build understanding and respect for others. These opportunities help foster curiosity, inclusion, and appreciation for the rich diversity of our school community.
  • Thursday evening, our Welcome Back family picnic was a wonderful success despite the last minute cancellation of trucks. We were fortunate to enjoy beautiful weather, and it was lovely to see so many families gathered together, reconnecting and building community. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so welcoming and enjoyable for our Nellie school community. Thank you to our School Council for organizing this special event!
  • On Thursday evening and Friday morning, we hosted Meet the Teacher. It was wonderful to see so many families join us Thank you for taking the time to connect with our staff, visit classrooms, and share stories about your children. These conversations help us build strong partnerships between home and school and ensure we can support each student’s success. The energy throughout the building was incredible, and we are grateful for your engagement, enthusiasm, and commitment to being active partners in your child's learning journey. Together, we are building a strong and connected Nellie community. A big shout out again to our school council for a lovely fall dinner to sustain us for the longer evening.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEEDS YOUR HELP!

  • Casino: Thursday October 8th and Friday, October 9th, 2026 at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino.  Please sign up to help out!
    Nellie McClung School has the opportunity to raise more than $90,000 at an upcoming casino, and we need your help to make it happen again. The opportunity to volunteer at a casino comes around every 2 years. It is by far our largest fundraising opportunity.  Volunteers don't need any experience!
    The shifts are daytime or evening, approximately 4-8 hours long. If you can help with just one shift, you alone raise approximately $2,500! If you are able to help, please consider signing up for a shift. Nellie Casino Shift Sign-Up

Next School Council meeting: Thursday October 15th at 6:30pm. Everyone welcome!  Receive updates from the Principal, hear about next year plans, fundraisers, fun events and provide your input. No need to take on a role. We are a friendly and relaxed group, committed to supporting our kids - please join us to see what we are involved in!

  2. Your name is current in our CBE Security Clearance database.
  3. You have filled out the Annual Volunteer Registration Form for the 2026-2027 school year.
