Nellie in the Know Jan. 26 | Thanks for your Support, Cinderella, Parking Lot, Supervision, Jump Rope for Heart, School Council

Happy Friday Friends and Family of Nellie,

I am so thankful for all of the support provided to the school to get us back up and running.  Our families, staff and students all came together to ensure that great learning opportunities would resume this week at Nellie.  I am so proud of the learning community we have and how we always work together to support student learning.  A highlight of the week was watching Cinderella performed live by the Alberta Musical Theatre Company right here at Nellie.  Thank you PAC for sponsoring this event!

This week saw the return of a number of student teachers at our school.  We are so fortunate to have these young minds working with our students and developing their skills at Nellie.  Please make them feel welcome.

Sincerely,

Darren Dyck, Principal

Parking Lot

The parking lot can be a very dangerous place.  This week there were 2 reported near misses where children were almost hit by a car.  To avoid dangerous situations the parking lot will be closed from 8:10 – 8:45 each day.  Families are reminded that students should be dropped off on Palliser Drive or in the alley behind the school.  Please let’s keep our children safe!

Supervision After School

There is no outside afterschool supervision of students on the playground or on the ice rink.  This week a number of students were sent to school with their skates, wanting to skate on the rink afterschool.  Some had helmets and some did not.  As parents you must assess your risk tolerance for your child but please know that the school is not supervising them on the ice rink.  Skating is a CBE Restricted Activity which means if we as a school want to have our students skate there are very strict regulations we must follow.

Jump Rope For Heart

Jump Rope for Heart Kick off Assembly will be Monday Jan. 29. We will have a short morning assembly to let students know about this event. We are excited to dedicate the next 2 ½ weeks to learning new jump rope techniques in our gym classes. But, we are especially excited to share our school wide donating goal of $2,000. The online donation weblink is set up to accept donations: https://jumpropeforheart.crowdchange.ca/52088

On Feb. 14, we will hold a Jump Rope for Heart Final assembly. During the assembly our final donation total will be shared. If we reach our $2,000 goal, Mr. Dyck as graciously volunteered to take FOUR pies in the face from 4 students! Additionally, students will demonstrate their jump rope skills and there will be "Jump Rope for Heart" swag prizes for students who have shown dedication and improved their jump rope skills.

Stay tuned for more information for our Valentine's Day Jump Rope for Heart Event details as families are welcome!
